Tolkien Visual Collecting Guide: Lord of the Rings Fellowship Movie 25th Anniversary Stamps

These stamps were released by UK Royal Mail to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the release of the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring movie on 20th March 2026.

The release includes more than just a single set of stamps. It includes:

The base set of stamps consists of 8 1st class stamps featuring images of characters in scenes from the Fellowship movie. The One Ring’s inscription, written in Elvish Tengwar script, is imprinted on the stamps in hidden ink and only revealed when exposed to UV light.

A Miniature Sheet of 4 longer 1st class stamps featuring locations from the Fellowship movie, within a map of Middle-Earth background.

A “Smiler” Collectors Sheet of the base 8 stamps alongside with 8 self adhesive labels which feature scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies, within a ring in the fire background.

A Prestige Book with 24 pages of images and details about the movie and the stamps and including 4 stamp sheets “panes”. The stamp panes feature the 8 base set, over 2 panes, the Miniature Sheet and an exclusive definitive stamps pane featuring 5 general release definitive stamps with a one ring smiler.

There was also a Limited Edition version of the Prestige Book release. This version is bound in a gold cover and comes in a gold foil presentation box. It is limited to 2001 copies.

Mint Stamps

Printer Pages

The Base set of stamps were printed in sheets of 2 stamps. Each should having 2 pages of stamps.

I believe the Miniature Sheets were printed individually, however a limited edition page was also produce. These were limited to 200 and were numbered.

Character Packs

There were 2 Character Packs produced one with the Base set and one with the Miniature Sheet. Both featured the stamps on a Sauron Eye background. The reverse has a One Ring in the fire image.

I’m not sure if these are usable mint stamps or are affixed the background.

Fan Sheets

These feature 3 of the base sets stamps affixed to a larger image. There is one featuring the Gandalf stamp and one featuring the Frodo stamp. Each sheet is limited to 5000. I don’t think these are usable mint stamps or are affixed to the background.

Presentation Pack

The official Presentation Pack includes the mint Base set and a Miniature Sheet all in a pack with a descriptive pamphlet.

Buckingham Forged In Fellowship Covers

2 Covers were produced by Buckingham Covers with a title of “Forged In Fellowship”. One Cover featured an image of Mount Doom, the other an image of Hobbiton. These covers were primarily produced alongside the 2 Forged In Fellowship Postmarks.

Buckingham Mount Doom and Hobbiton Covers with the Smiler and corresponding stamps with the issue Postmarks on a set of 2 covers.

The Buckingham Covers were also produced with the 4 Prestige panes, there were 2 sets of 4 covers, both sets consisting of 2 Mount Doom covers and 2 Hobbiton Covers. The first set has the 2 Forged In Fellowship Postmarks (each one twice), the second set has Ringland, Oxford, Spellbrook and Overcliff Postmarks.

There was one other Buckingham Cover produced with the Mount Doom cover, the set of Landscape stamps from the Miniature Sheet and a Gandalf Ride Postmark.

Stamps Postcard Set

Royal Mail produced a set of Postcards of the Lord of the Rings stamps. There are 13 postcards in the set showing the 8 stamps from the Base Set, the 4 Landscape stamps from the Miniature Sheet and a final postcard of the full Miniature Sheet.
